BY THE “APU AUSANGATE” ROUTE 7 LAGOONS

2 DAYS / 1 NIGHT

The Ausangate, whose original name in the native language (Quechua) is Awsanqati, also known as the “Apu Creator of Waters”, is the 5th highest mountain in Peru with an average of 6,385m.a.s.l. (20,948 feet) considered a Major Apu, Sacred Andean God and protector of the inhabitants of the Cusco Valley.

The mountain is located in the heart of the Andes mountain range (the longest continental mountain range on the planet with 8,500 km. Or 5,281 miles that starts in the extreme south, from Tierra del Fuego and crosses the countries of Argentina, Chile, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and part of Venezuela).  The 7 lakes are located to the north of the Ausangate snow-capped peak, on the western edge of the Vilcanota mountain range and 3 and a half hours driving southeast from the city of Cusco.

ANDINA AMAZONICA, takes you to walk through the most remote and beautiful places towards the Ausangate mountain, where the sky touches the earth, intermingling with the grasslands of the heights, delighting our senses with the presence of wetlands, lagoons and streams that are fed by the melting waters of the Apu Ausangate. With ANDINA AMAZONICA, you will be able to take your memories photographed among the most picturesque landscapes that nature offers us, enjoying also the wonderful thermal mineral-medicinal waters, where you can take a bath to relax your muscles and revitalize your body.

During the trip and on the way to our camp, you will be able to see the different colors of the waters of the first lagoons, with shades of brown, turquoise, bright green and deep blue. The names of the lagoons were baptized by the same settlers of yesteryear, perhaps by our own ancestors and these are: Laguna de Puca Cocha, Laguna de Pata Cocha, Laguna de alca Cocha, Laguna de Qomer Cocha, Otorongo Macho, Otorongo Hembra, Azul Cocha. The Pata Cocha and Qomer Cocha Lagoons are the most outstanding due to their intense color and according to travelers they can be compared to the famous Laguna 69 in the Cordillera Blanca.

Dare to discover the Andes, to follow the trail of the chasqui (Inca messenger), to sleep at more than 5,000 m.a.s.l. (16,400 ft), to rest in a glamping, with all the services for your comfort and the first class camping equipment for your safety and comfort. ANDINA AMAZONICA invites you to live two days in the mountain, recharge your spiritual battery and renew the alliance with the Pachamama (mother earth), you bring your desires and we take the rest!

DAY 1- BETWEEN FARM FIELDS AND ALPACAS

  • For this two-day excursion, we start the hike from the community of Upi, located at 4,200m.a.s.l. (13,780 feet), another picturesque community, much smaller than Pacchanta. (13,780 feet), another picturesque community, much smaller than Pacchanta, where one can also appreciate the “modus vivendis” of the Andean people in its natural and original form, with its people also mostly Quechua-speaking, typical clothes that characterize them with their stone houses (pirca) and thatched roofs, with their small animals base of their self-subsistence, their small plots, most of them also with crops of Andean potato and other tubers. Here also thanks to the visit of tourists, the community has an extra income from tourism with the sale of their own handicrafts and textiles.
  • The hike begins in a flat area, the walking time is approximately 7 km (4.34 miles) with a difference in altitude of 200 meters (656 feet) until you reach the base camp located at 4,400 meters above sea level (14,436 feet) where you will have lunch.
  • In the afternoon, you will have the time at your disposal to take your photographic views and rest; at night the firmament will offer us a unique spectacle of lights, millions of stars that show their light as if they competed with each other to show us how bright they are, constellations in the sidereal space, or if there is a full moon it will illuminate us with its magical mantle illuminating the snowy peaks. All this depending on the weather and the season of the year in which we are.

DAY 2- SUNRISE AND COFFEE

  • The next day, we will wake up with the aroma of the unmistakable coffee, with a fresh morning and multicolored fields, after greeting mother earth (Pacha Mama), we will have breakfast prepared by our collaborators, immediately after we start with the hike, because this time the difficulty will be more demanding because of the distance we will have to walk and the unevenness to climb to the viewpoint of the 7 lagoons.
  • In this opportunity the challenge is to reach the viewpoint during the morning, to take advantage of the sun’s rays that illuminate the peaks of the snow-capped mountains and the waters of the lagoons giving them those shades that characterize them.
  • After the rest, the photographic views and the scenery that will contemplate our senses, we begin the descent, but this time by a different route, heading to the village of Pacchanta where we will meet with its inhabitants and ancient culture. After interacting with them, we will be waiting for the thermal mineral-medicinal baths that will be conducive to enjoy them, as well as relax in the middle of nature.
